External BGP Visibility — DFZ Monitoring
RoutePulse monitors the visibility of your announced prefixes across the Default-Free Zone in real time by consuming the RIPE RIS Live WebSocket stream. Twenty-three global Route Information Service collectors provide a worldwide perspective on how your routes propagate through the internet, giving you an external vantage point that complements internal BMP monitoring. For each prefix, RoutePulse tracks a visibility percentage derived from how many of these collectors currently see your route, and raises a CRITICAL severity alert whenever visibility drops below 70%. Origin AS mismatch detection identifies cases where external collectors observe a different origin AS than expected — an early indicator of route hijacks, misconfigurations, or upstream filtering.
Events are stored in a ring buffer for efficient historical lookup and memory management. Each visibility drop alert includes a per-prefix cooldown to prevent notification fatigue during extended instability. This external validation layer is essential because if your prefix disappears from the DFZ, internal monitoring alone cannot detect the problem — you need a view from outside your own network. RoutePulse uses this capability to detect route hijacks that are visible externally but invisible from your local vantage point, providing a critical security layer. The module works alongside RPKI validation and anomaly detection to deliver comprehensive routing security, ensuring that prefix origin, propagation health, and behavioral baselines are all continuously validated from both internal and external perspectives.
